about

Text: Magnús Guðmundsson (1870 - 1914), v.1; Rósa Guðmundsdóttir (1795 - 1855), vv2 - 5.
Tunes: trad. & Bára Grímsdóttir, arr. Bára Grímsdóttir & Chris Foster.

Rósa Guðmundsdóttir, often known as Skáld Rósa (Rósa the Poet) was a travelling midwife. Her sometimes complicated love life provided rich source materials for her much-loved poems about love, loss and heartbreak. Bára brought these five separate verses together, set them to a traditional tune and added a tune of her own for the third verse.

lyrics

English translation

You, I young knew best.
You, I young kissed.
You, I young wanted most.
You, I young lost.

The sea will be raging.
All around the ground rumbling,
huge rocks falling.
I think of you, sighing.

The second name of my son
constantly reminds me of you.
This woman was often undressed,
up in your bed.

The eye weeps clear tears.
Faithfulness is reduced to crumbs.
My heart is sore wounded.
Betrayal is hard to endure.

Even though the hot spring freezes,
bare glacier covers valleys,
stones talk and all such things,
I shall never forget you.
