WHO REAPS THE PROFIT? WHO PAYS THE PRICE? (Leon Rosselson)
This song was first recorded on the album ‘Nuclear Power No Thanks’ which I worked on with Leon and others, in 1981. But the song is about much more than Nuclear Power. It presents a view of our world where the traditions and dignity of indigenous peoples, along with the biosphere that we all inhabit, are violently disregarded in the greedy scramble to exploit our earth’s resources for the short-term profit of the few.
As I write these notes thirty-five years later, the Standing Rock Sioux tribe has set up the largest Native American inter-tribal gathering in a century in North Dakota, USA. Their aim is to stop the Dakota Access oil pipeline being built across their sacred lands. Meanwhile, in England, the decision to build the Hinkley Point C nuclear power station in my native county of Somerset, has just been ratified.
